A groundbreaking wildlife study has confirmed a monumental milestone for environmental conservation in our archipelago. Researchers from the Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF) and the University of Exeter revealed that the wild population of Aldabra giant tortoises has reached an estimated 180,000 individuals on the pristine Aldabra Atoll.
Published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, the landmark research analyses five years of tortoise counts recorded between 2018 and 2022. The findings establish that the population of these prehistoric gentle giants is thriving, far outnumbering the total human population of Seychelles.

A Historic Comeback for an Iconic Species
This latest figure represents the most accurate baseline for the species since the late 1990s, when counts estimated around 100,000 tortoises. The recovery highlights one of the most successful wildlife conservation efforts in the Indian Ocean.
During the 19th century, relentless exploitation drove these majestic reptiles to near extinction, leaving fewer than 1,000 individuals alive. Decades of dedicated protection led to Aldabra Atoll being declared a strict nature reserve in 1981, followed by its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
Today, the isolated UNESCO atoll stands alongside the Galápagos Islands as one of only two places on Earth where giant tortoises roam freely in the wild. Dr Frauke Fleischer-Dogley, CEO of the Seychelles Islands Foundation, described the achievement as a testament to sustained environmental stewardship:
“More than 180,000 giant tortoises roaming freely on our atoll is proof of what long-term commitment to conservation can achieve. This is wonderful news for Seychelles, for the world, and for everyone who has worked to protect Aldabra.”
